Montcoffer Bed and Breakfast (Northumberland)
Advantages: Luxurious accommodation, friendly hosts, good food.
Together with my husband, we got smitten by the idea of seeing Hadrian's Wall being lit on Match the 13th.
I got on Internet to do some research on best spot to view the event and decided Housesteads Fort is the place we looking for. There was a selection of hotels and B&Bs but Montcoffer in Bardon Mill stood out as a small but luxurious 5-star establishment.
I called the tel. no. given on their web page and the same evening I had the booking confirmed without any fee incurred.
The booking was easy done with John - very friendly owner. There is an extensive information on their website about Montcoffer and surroundings - very helpful may I add: http://www.montcoffer.co.uk/index.htm.
We arrived on the day about 1 pm. and were welcome by Dehlia, John's partner. She showed us around and took us to our accommodation for the day. We were pleasantly surprised being led to upstairs suite with separate living room and luxurious bedroom very tastefully decorated to a high standard and offering immaculately clean facilities.
The accommodation contained shower room with 2 sets of clean towels and towelling robe and a hair dryer. There was a TV set in a bedroom and a dvd set with an extensive collection of films in a living room. There were also a tea, coffee and hot chocolate making facilities to our disposal.
Beside this one, there were 2 more double en-suite bedrooms in a separate building - former stables. Both rooms, ideal for families and couples and with disabled access, reflect Dehlia's interior design skills, being beautifully furnished with modern, comfortable beds and attractive soft furnishings.
Cars can be parked right by the door where there is a ramp for easy roll-in access into the accommodation.
After a short introduction to the premises, we were offered a breakfast list with an option of making our own selection for the next morning - quite impressive.
The owners kindly let us a detailed map of the area and informed us about dining out locally.
After having a rest with a cup of tea and changing into a walking boots we ventured to the Hadrian's Wall.
The village of Bardon Mill is a good point for exploring two important places on the Hadrian's Wall: Housesteads Fort and Vindolanda Fort and civil settlement, both well preserved remains of ancient Roman monument. Luckily, the 13th of Match was a sunny though windy day and we could rumble around to our hearts content.
For the evening meal we chose the closest possible place within a walking distance from our accommodation, a local pub/restaurant recommended by our helpful hosts.
We had a more than decent dinner within a friendly, local environment.
After a restful night, we were ready for our pre-ordered breakfast in a spacious beamed room, with a custom build "Sumo" wood burning stove.
John and Dehlia made us feel welcome and pampered in their loving household.
At the end we paid only £78,- for two people per night - a real bargain comparing to others.
We departed happy and fully satisfied, thinking what a great place would that be for our summer holidays.
I wholeheartedly recommend Montcoffer for couples and families alike.
Summary: 5 star accommodation recommended throughout.
